What is Mini Bus Scheme 2025

The Tamil Nadu state government has revealed a comprehensive scheme that aims to transform last-mile connections throughout Chennai, marking a big step towards improving urban transportation. While Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin will start services in Theni, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin will formally launch the scheme in Thanjavur. The services will be introduced in Chennai by Health Minister Ma. Subramanian, while rollouts in different districts will be supervised by other cabinet members.

Unlike the earlier scheme, the new one would let private minibus services operate inside the Greater Chennai Corporation’s limits with the exception of the core city. Twenty of the private minibuses are expected to begin service around the city. On Monday, the rollout in Chennai will start with nine minibuses in South Chennai and eleven in North Chennai. In the city, 72 routes have been established, with 39 in the south and 33 in the north of Chennai. After the Transport Department retracted its first announcement, the plan that was originally scheduled to commence on May 1 was postponed. The updated launch date, 16 June, was mentioned in a new notice.

Objective of Mini Bus Scheme 2025

The  main objective of this scheme is to improve last-mile connectivity throughout the state. Over 1,000 current services will be included into the new scheme and 2,084 new minibus routes will be added overall.

Benefits

  • The Tamil Nadu government released the proposed New Comprehensive Mini Bus Scheme, 2024.
  • It suggests allowing operators to operate for a maximum of 25 kilometers of allowed route length.
  • Minibuses are now permitted to go up to 20 km, with 16 km of the distance supposed to be in remote areas.
  • In 1997, the State government launched the minibus program, allowing operators to travel up to 16 kilometers.
  • The scheme was extended two years later to allow operators to travel 20 kilometers.

Features

  • An extended maximum route length of 25 km is one of the scheme’s main features and at least 65% of the route must pass through communities that are currently underserved by regular bus services.
  • Routes that are already in place may overlap with the remaining 35%.
  • The routes may also be extended to public spaces within a kilometer of the route endpoint, such as schools, libraries, hospitals or government buildings.

Long-Term Effects on Economic Efficiency and Public Health

The recent addition of minibuses to Chennai’s transportation system may have significant effects when seen in a larger context. The scheme may enhance public health outcomes by lowering the degradation of air quality linked to heavy traffic by relieving traffic congestion and giving suburban people a dependable form of transportation. Additionally, it will boost the economy by making it simpler to go to marketplaces and places of employment in communities where there aren’t many major public transportation choices. All things considered, the new minibus program is a much-needed addition to the city’s urban planning approach.
